According to figures from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, for Pinellas County and Hillsborough County for 2019 there were 543 bike crashes in Hillsborough County. 11 of them were fatal. In Pinellas County for 2019 there were 513 bike crashes. 6 of them were fatal. This means Hillsborough and Pinellas combined were averaging 3 bike crashes every day. The bike crash numbers for 2020 were on a similar pace.
The numbers for Manatee County were 120 crashes. 4 fatal. Pasco County, 191 crashes. 8 fatal. Polk County, 136 crashes. 7 fatal. Sarasota County, 179 crashes. 6 fatal.
That is a total of 42 fatal bike crashes in Tampa Bay for 2019—the last year of complete Florida DMV statistics. That is an amazing statistic to understand that 42 of the bike riders on the road last year in Tampa Bay did not make it home. 42 friends, neighbors, family.
